Trotter House recognizes that oftentimes, an unexpected pregnancy is only one of many difficulties facing women in crisis. Rather than trying to just fix this one problem, Trotter House chooses to see these situations as catalysts for change and personal growth in every area of their client’s lives, for the sake of the individual moms and their entire families. By emphasizing life skills, education, peer support, and accountability, the center provides its clients with a space to work through their difficulties and resources to start the next chapter.
Trotter House is not a medical center or clinic, so its services complement rather than replace professional medical consultations. In order to help its clients receive proper medical attention, Trotter House maintains connections with local hospitals and has partnered with the Go Mobile Clinic, which comes to Trotter House on Wednesdays from 9 am to 2 pm.
Trotter House’s founder, Lori DeVillez, is an Evansville local, but her passion for helping women in need has led her to travel the country in order to empower other communities to start initiatives like the Trotter House. Trotter House is named after Lilias Trotter (1853-1928), a wealthy English woman who ministered to impoverished women first in her native London and later in Algeria, despite pressure from her family and friends to pursue her promising painting career. Today, Trotter House continues Lilias Trotter’s legacy of serving those in need in five different locations: Evansville, Mt. Vernon, and Jasper Indiana and Austin and Lindale, Texas. This mission stems from Jesus’ command to love everyone, especially those who are marginalized or in the greatest need (see Matthew 25:34-40). While Trotter House is a Christian organization, it welcomes and serves everyone, regardless of religious or cultural background.
Trotter House of Evansville is only a few years old but is quickly expanding its impact on the community. In 2025, the center served 106 new clients (a 65% increase from 2024) and logged 1,944 appointments (an 87% increase from 2024). This growth is part of a nationwide trend. A recent national survey of 2,775 pregnancy resource centers conducted by the Charlotte Lozier institute found that these centers served over 1 million new clients and provided over $450 million in free resources in 2024 alone.
Trotter House and other pregnancy resource centers can be particularly helpful resources for college-age adults who might be living away from family and support. In fact, young mothers and fathers under the age of 25 make up 36% of Trotter House’s clients. As young people navigate new stages of life, ever-changing political climates, and uncertainty about their futures, community-based resources like Trotter House will likely continue to grow in importance as places of help, healing, and hope.
